Food Technology
Food Technology for Year 7's
Our year seven students spend 6 days in the Food Technology program. This is not a cooking class. They are learning some basic cooking skills PLUS they gain an understanding of the nutrients and their roles in the body, food safety and how to prevent food poisoning, physiology – a study of the digestive and circulatory systems and why and how each meal of the day is important to good health. We also discuss how food and the production of food, has evolved in New Zealand over the past 150 years and what might happen in the future.
Students learn to invent new and exciting recipes for a Breakfast Bar, a between meal snack, a portable lunch, a potato dish, a fresh salad to be served with a meat dish and an evening meal meat dish from N.Z. beef or lamb.
Students therefore gain some practical skills, an understanding of technical processes involved in food production and an understanding of the historical trends in food in New Zealand. It is a very comprehensive program that encourages students to think deeply about their own diets and the effect it can have on their own health.
Food Technology for Year 8's
Because our students love to show off their cooking skills, we are now planning for and producing a Luncheon with an Ethnic Theme with the year 8 students.
They will each have the chance to invite a guest to their luncheon. Each dish will be trialled prior to serving the buffet luncheon in week 7 of their 8 week programme.
We are looking forward to some amazing dishes and interesting decorations.
