What is governance and what do Board members do?
Boards of trustees govern (control management) and principals manage the school. It must be clear that it is not the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the school - this is the responsibility of the principal and the school staff.
Board members are elected, selected, co opted or appointed to act on behalf of the school’s community to ensure that the school continuously improves student progress and achievement.
The Board of Trustees does this by providing strategic leadership and direction to the school and ensures that the vision and direction is reflected in the school charter.
The Board of Trustees are responsible for ensuring the school complies with all legal directives made by the government and the Ministry of Education.
Governance also involves establishing long term property plans, policies and procedures.
Being a good employer and maintain the financial health of the school are also included in governance parameters.
Governance in a nut shell is ‘designing the future’ of the school (one cannot rationally influence what has already happened).
